Hungry? Confused. Hungry?

I don't know if I'm hungry or not. I don't know the last time I knew I was hungry (for food, that is).
I know I eat. I know I feel the absence of food (sometimes). I know what its like to crave certain types of food. But I don't think I know what hunger feels like.
How do people know they're hungry? Is it that they can't go on, one more moment, unless they eat? That sounds like starvation. My dictionary defines hunger as
a craving or urgent need for food or a specific nutrient; an uneasy sensation occasioned by the lack of food; a weakened condition brought about by prolonged lack of food.
I don't know if I have "an urgent need for food." Is the sensation I'm experiencing an "urgent" one? Is it even a sensation? I may feel slightly weak, but I'm not sure...maybe I'm just thirsty.
How will I learn this?
There's a bony-scary guy on YouTube talking about false hunger as a craving (and shilling his books). Wikihow --forget that. I did find some good info on the Make Friends With Food blog.
Short answer: trial-and-error.

  1. How do I know when I’m hungry? Good question. When I feel weak and fatigued after not eating, I assume that’s low blood sugar. I don’t necessarily feel hungry when that happens. If I don’t eat much the night before, my stomach tells me I’m hungry the next morning. If I haven’t finished sleeping, I drink a small shot of Trader Joe’s pomegranate flavored kefir. Ummm. That does the trick.

  2. I love TJ's,but I haven't tried the kefir...
I'm now not *getting* very hungry, which is really weird for me. I have been eating every few hours, a piece of fruit, some berries, lunch of greens and tuna, coupla tbsps of almond butter throughout the day, fruit or beet/ginger/carrot juice in the morning. I keep thinking I should be hungry because the volume of food I'm eating is quite reduced (I didn't plan that part, by the way; it has just happened).
