My Best Investment (So Far)

I know the photo's a bit Seventies Suburban Hippie, but don't laugh. When you buy wagon loads of organic produce weekly, you don't want to waste your money on shrivelled, limp goods, and these bags are The Way To Make Sure You Don't.

I don't know about the science (something about "absorbing" and removing ethylene, a gas fruits and veg release when ripening, which also "accelerates...the ultimate deterioration" of said produce), but these babies work.
I did a  mega shop at People's Food Co-op (my new home away from home) 11 days ago, and brought home 15 lbs of juicing carrots, kale, ginger, salad greens, etc. And the bags (10/pack, approx $3-4).
Got home, popped each veg into its own bag, closed tightly. Done. Today, the salad greens are really crisp, as is everything else. No limpness at all. (I'm still doing my fruit test.)
TheEvert-Fresh Green Bags are reusable, and made in the US. Only caveat: I put a thumbnail through the top of one as I was pushing air out, so be gentle.

  1. Angie,

Thank you blogging about your experiences. I hope this journey you are on leads you to a place of happiness and contentment. Won't it be great not to be a slave to food.

    Much success to you.

  2. Lucy, thank you for your comment. Yes, it is nice to see the many ties that bind me in unhealthy ways to food and eating fall away. Also, I'm quite surprised about what I don't know about my body, true hunger, etc. If nothing else, this process is becoming quite the education about myself, and on so many levels.

  3. Thanks for the tip. I'm going to try these.

  4. Jan--do try them, though I found out (through two experiments) that they're not great with fruit. No horrible, just not nearly as protective of freshness as they are with vegetables.
